Video: Carolina in our past
Because providing occasional useless trivia about the Colbert Report is one of the things Third Beat does best, it would be negligent not to mention that the Stephen Colbert / James Taylor duet from Thursday night’s show was actually recorded in 2008, and never aired until now.
The rendition of Carolina In My Mind – a rather beautiful rendition – was taped when Taylor was a guest on the show in September 2008 (Taylor himself performed “(I’m A) Road Runner” on that episode).
Many would have figured this out solely from the lack of HD (somewhat disguised by the 2008 campaign clips inserted into the montage), but alert viewers would also notice an older-era Colbert portrait above the set’s fireplace (the “painting” is changed every year).
While the inserted video montage seemed a little random and… time-fillery? (hey, they do have a campaign rally to write for tomorrow), the truly impressive part of this time-travelling adventure is what the wardrobe department pulled off. They matched the tie. It’s exactly the same, from 2008 to 2012. That’s some dedicated continuity work, folks.
